It's annoying.. I know many of you vine submitters have seen this.

you copy some text, you go to paste it in your summary and suddenly there is a lot more text than you copied.

well this simple method blocks that nonsense.

Good tip!

127.0.0.1 tcr.tynt.com

I edit my hosts file often, and keep a shortcut to edit it on my desktop.

If you want a shortcut like that, just create a shortcut with the command
%SystemRoot%\system32\notepad.exe %SystemRoot%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

(I'm using Windows XP. It may be slightly different for other versions of Windows.)

If you're using the new Safari 5, there's an extension called "JavaScript Blacklist 1.0" that blocks Tynt, Intellitxt, and snap - the three worst offenders for not only copy-and-paste hijacking but also keyword hijacking.

To install it:

1) Open Safari Preferences, go to the Advanced tab, then tick the box that says "Show Develop menu in menu bar".

2) In the Develop menu, select "Enable Extensions"

3) Go here and click the Download Now link: http://homepage.mac.com/drewthaler/jsblacklist/

4) Double-click the downloaded file to install the extension.

Done!

Upgrade. It's free from Software Update.

Yes, you'll need to upgrade. Safari 4 doesn't support the new Extensions system.

Hmm, been upgrading, wonder why it hasn't happened yet.

Strange.

okay, and I think I installed the Blacklist app.

If you go back into Safari Preferences, you'll now see an Extensions tab. You should see the Blacklist extension listed if it's installed...

Another new feature is called "Reader"...which essentially replicates the functionality of the "Readability" bookmarklet. Go to a site that has a lot going on (multiple sidebars, really small text, etc.) then look for the "Reader" icon in the location bar. Click it...

Blocking Unwanted Parasites with a Hosts File

What it does ...
The Hosts file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. This file is loaded into memory (cache) at startup, then Windows checks the Hosts file before it queries any DNS servers, which enables it to override addresses in the DNS. This prevents access to the listed sites by redirecting any connection attempts back to the local (your) machine. Another feature of the HOSTS file is its ability to block other applications from connecting to the Internet, providing the entry exists.

Looked through the HOSTS file is creates, already includes the tcr.tynt.com listed in the article seed.

Maybe I'm weird but I usually copy/paste into Notepad, remove anything I don't want, then copy/paste into Newsvine or elsewhere. It's just a habit that I picked up years ago because I didn't want any extraneous formatting coming over from the source.
